Bing ChatGPT
An Introduction for those in the Research and Innovation Space
Overview
Introduction to the concept of ChatGPT.
Various methods to access and use ChatGPT for free on Microsoft Edge.
Discussion on real-world examples.
Potential applications for individuals involved in sponsored research.
AI tools like Bing Chat, integrated into Edge, enhance workflow across professions by enabling data analysis and idea synthesis within the browser. This advancement, offering increased potential applications, particularly benefits the Research and Innovation sector. Despite competition, Bing Chat's simplicity sets it apart from other paid services.
Microsoft Edge Browser
Microsoft Edge has evolved from early stage "Internet Explorer (IE)" to become my preferred browser.
Key reasons include seamless integration with Microsoft Office and synergy with Windows 11 and Samsung Phones.
The synergy enables virtual access to phone on Windows and copying-pasting between devices.
More details on this topic will be provided in a separate post.
Microsoft Edge is built on the same technology as the Google Chrome browser, Chromium, and supports all Chrome extensions, including Bing Chat. This innovative feature offers considerable value to users who aim to optimize their workflow and discover new insights through OpenAI, albeit currently exclusive to the Edge browser.
Bing ChatGPT enables targeted searches on specific websites, and more importantly, searches within an open documents in the browser. Further information on this functionality can be found below.
Setting Up Bing ChatGPT
Install the Edge Browser and click the large blue "Bing" icon found at the top-right corner of the browser.
Grant ChatGPT permission to view the content of your webpages by opening the setting s menu and ensuring that “Page Context” is toggled on.
With these steps completed, you are now set up and ready to take part in the AI revolution.
Using Bing ChatGPT
As of April 2023 there are 3 components of Bing Chat:
Chat to your documents and webpages.
Compose a new piece of text.
Insights search the internet.
Play around with Chat settings and see the various results from the same question between the 3 modes of 1) Creative, 2) Balanced, and 3) Precise.
Side Note: You can generate images in "Creative mode" for example "Make me an image of a pot of money of money on the moon"
Bing Chat >> "Hello World"
What should my first prompt be?
>>Prompt: “I am new to Bing ChatGPT please give me an overview”
>>Prompt: “I am a [Insert your job title/description] how can I use ChatGPT to help me in my job?”
Play around with the wording of your question, you can even type out your question and ask ChatGPT to reword your question to get a better response.
Be polite, use please and thank you every now and then to keep the AI in a good mood.
Next we will look at how to “Talk” to a webpage or PDF file.
Congratulations you just started your journey on becoming a “Prompt Engineer” currently, there are jobs paying $200,000 per year for those with experience in prompt engineering, not bad considering ChatGPT 3.5 was only released back in November 2022
"Talking" to a 200 page PDF file
Open the 200+ page NSF proposal and Award Policies and Procedure Guide click here
>>Prompt 1: “Summarize this document, use bullet points”
>>Response: “This document is the Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide (PAPPG) from the National Science Foundation (NSF). It provides guidance for preparing and submitting proposals to NSF and for managing and monitoring NSF awards. Some of the main points of this document are:
It outlines the NSF merit review principles and criteria, as well as the types of funding opportunities and submissions.
It specifies the format and content of the proposal, including the required sections, documents, and certifications.
It describes the NSF proposal processing and review process, as well as the non-award decisions and transactions.
It explains the NSF award administration and monitoring procedures, including the financial requirements, payments, reporting, and closeout.
It establishes the recipient standards for financial management, property management, procurement, conflict of interest, research security, and responsible conduct of research.
It defines the allowability of costs and the other post award requirements and considerations, such as protection of living organisms, intellectual property, publication, and environmental statutes.”
>>Prompt 2: “Am i required to make a financial disclosure, and where on the page is it?”
>>Response:
“According to the web search results, NSF requires each grantee organization employing more than fifty persons to maintain an appropriate written and enforced policy on conflict of interest and that all conflicts of interest for each award be managed, reduced or eliminated prior to the expenditure of the award funds1. The current web page context does not mention financial disclosure specifically, but it does include a section on NSF disclosure requirements in Chapter II.B. You can find it on page II-2 of the document. It describes the types of disclosures that NSF requires from proposers and recipients, such as current and pending support, biographical sketch, and collaborative arrangements. It also states the consequences for violating these requirements.”
Example 1: Simplify a Technical Document
Open a page/file in the browser, for example click here.
>>Prompt: "Simplify this document."
>>Response: “The article is about how the temperature on Mars changes during the day and the year at different places where spacecraft have landed. The authors used a computer model to calculate the temperature under the surface of Mars at these places. They wanted to see if the temperature could be warm enough for some kinds of life to survive. They used 253 K (about -20 degrees C) as a minimum temperature for life, because some microbes on Earth can live at that temperature. They also considered that some salts on Mars can make water stay liquid at lower temperatures. They found that 253 K is reached under the surface at some times of the year at all the landing sites, and most of the year near the equator. However, the temperature also drops very low at night and during winter, so any life would have to endure these changes. The authors suggest that this could be possible for some microbes that can go dormant when it is too cold or dry.”
Example 2: Simplify a Technical Document
Open a page/file in the browser, for example click here.
>>Prompt: "Simplify this document"
>>Response: “The article is about an experiment that studied how fast water ice disappears on Mars. Water ice is important for understanding the history and the possibility of life on Mars. The experiment measured how fast water ice turns into water vapor under different conditions of temperature, wind speed and humidity. Temperature is how hot or cold something is, wind speed is how fast the air moves and humidity is how much water vapor is in the air. The experiment found that temperature is the most important factor that affects how fast water ice disappears on Mars. Wind speed also has some effect, but only when the humidity is very low. The experiment also developed a new formula that can be used to calculate how fast water ice disappears on Mars for any temperature and wind speed. The article explains why this formula is better than previous ones and how it can help future studies of water ice on Mars.”
